Most Sacred Majesty: On the 22nd day of the month of May of the year 1678, I dispatched from an unknown location, off the coast of Mexico, to the Madeline de Brest , a vessel, and in her a servant of mine, with orders to pass on my letter and its contents to your Majesty. I’ve encountered the people of these distant parts. It seems to me important that your Highness should become acquainted with my doings. I will therefore narrate some events plainly and to the best of my ability. I will describe only the principle and most remarkable incidents of said journey. Great discoveries have been made in your Majesty’s name. Mexico holds unfathomable quantities of gold, and silver, much beauty can be found in this savage place. As your Majesty is aware, this new world is also being explored by the Spanish. Our expedition avoids the Spaniards at all costs. This is to fend off any battles that may occurred if our two parties met. Most of the lands have not been touched by the hand of man. Roads and passages can hardly be found here. The mountains are so high and the forests so thick and impenetrable, that we could only see the spot where we placed our feet. Looking upwards, blue skies disappeared over our heads, the trees so tall and so close to each other, that those who climbed up them to discover land could not see beyond a stone’s throw . We found a village with several maize plantations in the finest of possible conditions. We also found other provisions, fowls, honey, beans and other produce of the land. The natives, if there were any at this place, not having shown themselves or made any oppositions, my men carried with us as much as we could back to the ship. Our provisions were running scare at this time. It was indeed a most welcome discovery and compensation for all our past troubles, for had we not found it at that moment, we should all have perished through hunger. The Mexica Empire, tribes, and peoples hold so many dark and mysterious secrets. They are ruthless heathens, with many gods that hunger for human sacrifice and blood. It happened that one of my men saw one of the Indians who had come with me from the Tenuxtitlan eating a piece of flesh taken from the body of another Indian, whom he had killed on entering Iztapan. When the case was reported to me, I had the Indian arrested, and there, in the presence of all, had him burnt alive, for having slain and afterwards eaten of the fellow creature. An abomination, which your Majesty, and myself in your royal name, have repeatedly condemned, ordering the people of these parts to abstain from doing.

Agatha

Like an Agatha Christie novel, we are revealing all the mysteries behind this font. It started in 2003 when Ian Party walked into a bookshop in Lausanne and found La Comédie du jour sous la République Athénienne by Albert Millaud and illustrations by Caran D’Ache. This literary treasure has been a constant sources of inspiration. The unique typeface found this book have helped him reinterpret type design. His first attempt was in 2003 with one weight, Regular, which consisted of lower and uppercase . After that Ian completed the font with italics in 2006. Then there was another version created for L’Officiel in 2010. And it didn’t stop there, he went on to develop another version in 2012. And now we see the birth of yet another beautiful rendition with Agatha. What originally attracted Ian to the font was its romantic and almost floral approach to design. The Iconic g, round a, the serifs with an interior curve, the y, and the curved shapes in W,V,A,M,N,v,w. We can feel the beginning of art nouveau with this font. Agatha is the living proof of a lifetime of work, systematically changing the aesthetic to conform to today’s design standards. This new dynamic interpretation is a brute force with a modern and romantic approach. It’s a cocktail of experimentation in four parts, a sprinkle of neoclassicism, a dash of 19th century Didot, a good dose of Amazonia Typeface. And the most important part, passion and dedication to his craft. The latest redesign has given birth to Agatha, a typeface with the DNA of Amazonia typeface at its core. The special characteristic of Agatha can be found in the lowecase g, upper and lower case V W that still maintains an organic roundness, and unexpected serifs on upper and lower case C. The variable font version contains two axes weight and contrast that ranges from Thin to Black, and from contrast to low contrast.

Africa

The Africa font name is inspired by the earth’s second-largest and second-most populated continent on Earth. It’s also considered by most paleoanthropologists to be the oldest inhabited territory on the planet, with the human species originating from the continent. The Africa font collection is composed of three styles, Africa Drylands, Africa Rainfall and Africa Cliff.

Africa Cliff is the opulent style in this collection. The contrast is turned up to the highest peeks, thicks are mega bold, while the thins are delicate lines. This typeface is strong and graceful like the African landscape. The details are a beautiful discovery, the arches in “m” are bold and sharp mounds. The serifs in “C” and “G” and the “$” sign resemble fish hooks. The middle peek and the right hand serif meet in the middle for a razor sharp kiss and the dots are as round as a full moon.

This typefaces takes inspiration from display fonts like Caslon, and calligraphic lettering that can be seen in the blooming ampersand and uppercase Q with its organic aesthetic are a beautiful contrast to the sharp peeked terminals in the uppercase E ,F , Z, and lowercase f and z. This typeface and its unique typographical playground invites you to explore its soft mounds, shape hills and valleys, get lost in the wilds of Africa Cliff.

Azaka

The name Azaka is derived from the Haitian god of farming. The patron of agriculture, Azaka is responsible for ensuring prosperous crops and harvests, and is an especially strong spirit for his people, Azaka is also referred to as Papa Zaka,  Mazaka, or Kouzen, Azaka’s name is though to be pre-Columbian, from the indigenous Taino Indian language, either deriving from zada, meaning corn, or maza, meaning maize. The farmers of Haiti celebrate and bestow luxurious gifts upon Azaka, this saint deserves only the best for the many blessing he bestows upon his people. This asymmetrical sans serif hybrid typeface is versatile, sharp and not about style.

Azteca

Several traditions, cultures, are combined in this font. The Azteca font was a personal challenge for Ian Party. He’d been interested in the idea of combining a didone and mono font for a long time. And with the combination of these two particular styles, it brings up some design challenges. Like how to fill the white spaces. It’s definitely an interesting design playground, and after lots of trials and errors. Ultimately the mixture of these two styles he played with generated lots of surprising design solutions. In addition, When designing Azteca he didn’t focus on any particular font. But we can say that it was the vertical, mechanic and rigid structure of the didone fonts of the late 18th century that inspired him. In short, this font is a formal experimentation of these two styles. When designing a font like this he could have made more exceptions with the width of some characters, but it was a question of balance and finding the right rhythm in the font. The m contrary to the w, he didn’t find any visually appealing solutions within a mono structure. So he decided to widen the possibilities, same with the &. He didn’t feel the need to make many exceptions, he felt it would take away from the visual rhythm and structure of the font. The extra long serifs in this font add a light touch to this relevantly dramatic and explosive font. The contrast between thick and thin is an eye catching force. Other interesting features of this font can be seen in the perfectly round and moon like terminals of the lowercase i, f, j, r and y. A strong feature is the lowercase and uppercase W, the condensed, thick, sharp stems resemble jaguar fangs. The OTF format is available in three weights (Headline, Kingsize and Text). The variable versions contrast has lots of possibilities that range from (1-100).

Aloha

Aloha! Five simple letters that express beauty and force all at once. The Hawaiian word for love, affection, peace, compassion, and mercy. But to native Hawaiians, this word has a much deeper cultural significance, the term is used to define a force that can hold together existence. This word’s strong connotation has inspired us to capture all its qualities visually. A monospace font with a mixture of serif and sans serif letters are combined to create this font. Long horizontal serif brackets are seen in the lowercase (f, g, I, j, l and t ). Sharp uppercase serifs are featured in the (C, G, I, J, S). Lowercase unique features include; the (a and c) has rounded serifs. Lowercase (b, d, h, k, m, n, p, q, r, s, t) have sharp serifs that adorn them. The remainder of the character set is created in a classic sans serif tradition. The font comes in 5 styles, ranging from black to thin, and is available in OTF, WOFF2, and Variable formats. In the spirit of the word Aloha, we aimed to visually showcase its force in this typeface, two opposites beautifully coexisting to create a visually harmonious and impactful message.
